Women in European academia before 1800—religion, marriage, and human capital

Abstract We document the participation of women in European academia from first universities to eve Industrial Revolution. A total 108 taught at or were members academies arts and sciences. Most them active Catholic southern Europe—an unexpected result. conjecture that Protestantism left less room for top distribution human capital exercise their talent. The percentage ever-married female scholars is 79%, but a large fraction remained childless. Comparing with 58,995 male scholars, we find they on average better.
